Chai Apple Oatmeal ~ Recipe ReDux

This month’s Recipe ReDux of cooking with tea gave me the opportunity to combine my two breakfast staples – tea and oatmeal. While my morning cup is most often filled with a jasmine green tea, I knew this challenge was meant for me to experiment with a tea that could stand up to foods and add bold flavor, like chai tea. Oatmeal is a great vehicle for intricate spices like those found in chai teas. Infusing your morning bowl of cereal with a robust tea is a great way to add a new excitement to your breakfast. See how I made my go-to Apple Oatmeal into something a latte more to love – I obviously couldn’t help myself.
Chai Apple Oatmeal
Makes 1 serving
Ingredients
1/3 cup old fashioned oats
1 Tbsp. ground flaxseed
1 chai tea bag
2/3 cup water, boiling*
1 – 1 ½ Tbsp. unsweetened applesauce
You can even sweeten with a little honey
Directions
In a glass measuring cup, combine 2/3 cup boiling water with a chai tea bag and steep for 8 – 10 minutes. In a microwave save bowl, combine oats and ground flaxseed. Take steeped tea and gently squeeze the remaining liquid out of the tea bag. Add chai tea to oat and flaxseed mixture. Top with applesauce and microwave for 40 seconds. Mix and enjoy!
*To make with milk, reduce the amount of water used to steep tea and add milk before microwaving.
Tasty toppings:
– Additional spices such as cinnamon or ground ginger
– Sliced or chopped nuts
– Dried fruit
– Fresh apples or pears, chopped
– Honey
